My bottom line
A couple of weeks ago, a network engineer called me with a Coriant Infinera C300 node in front of him, a dead SFP+ in his hand, and an outage ticket that was already three hours old. He asked a simple question: 'Can a compatible optic work in this?' I couldn't answer with a yes or no, because the answer is a category, not a promise.
Let me be clear about my lane. I work for a company that supplies and tests Infinera-compatible transceivers. I've handled over 200 rush orders in the last four years, including same-day deliveries for C300 and legacy Coriant Infinera line cards. I'm not going to tell you to rip out original Infinera hardware. I'm going to help you think through the option.
There is no universal answer
If a blog post starts with 'the best Infinera-compatible optic for every C300,' close it. It doesn't exist. The right answer depends on whether you're in an outage, a refresh, a compliance audit, or an accidental search for phone settings. So let's start with the one thing that matters before any scenario.
Before the scenarios: know what C300 actually means
Infinera acquired Coriant in 2018. So when you see 'Coriant Infinera' on a card, it's usually a product that started life under Coriant and now sits under the Infinera umbrella. C300 is one of those legacy product names. In the field, it's often used as shorthand for a chassis family, not a single SKU.
That matters because the same C300 chassis can take different transceivers depending on the line card. You might need SFP+, XFP, CFP2, CSFP, or even X2/Xenpak on older ports. If you're dealing with DWDM technology, you also have wavelength, channel plan, and modulation format to worry about. The part number on the line card tells us which of those options is real. The chassis name alone doesn't.
Infinera products today include advanced technologies like ICE6, XR optics, and FlexCoherent. But the installed base is not all new. Many operators still run C300-era equipment because it works and because replacing it is expensive. That's where compatible optics make the most sense.
Scenario 1: It's broken and it has to work today
If the link is down and you're losing money, you don't need a long comparison. You need a tested replacement that can ship today. In that situation, I'd rather buy a compatible optic from a vendor who has it in stock than wait a week for an OEM module—but only if the vendor can tell me exactly which line card and software version they tested against.
Back in March 2024, we had a client with a C300-based system and a failed CFP2 optic. The OEM lead time was seven business days. We found a compatible module in stock, paid an extra $220 for overnight air, and had it in the rack in about 14 hours. Did we know for certain it would work? Not 100%. And if a vendor says 'we guarantee 100% compatibility,' start asking questions. Per FTC advertising guidance (ftc.gov), a claim has to be substantiated before it's made. What we had was the seller's test record showing the same part working on the same card family. That was enough to take the shot. It worked.
Before you pay a rush fee, ask three questions:
- Do you have this exact module in stock today?
- Can you send me the MSA diagnostic report from your test?
- If it doesn't work on my card, is there overnight replacement?
Scenario 2: Building spares and standardizing a legacy fleet
When the network isn't on fire, the temptation is to buy in bulk and save money. I'd rather you buy one, test, then buy the fleet.
- Get the exact card part numbers for every site.
- Buy one compatible module from two different vendors.
- Test both in a maintenance window against each card family.
- Document the results: date, firmware, card, port, distance, optical power, DOM reports.
- Choose the winner and build your stock around it.
This approach is not magic. It's qualification. In 2023, we did this for a client with 14 C300 sites. One vendor's module worked great on SFP+ ports but threw a temperature warning on CFP2 line cards. We found out before deploying, not after.
Also consider the 'unblocking' side. If you move a module between card types, sometimes the EEPROM vendor ID doesn't match what the new card expects. The module is physically fine, but the port stays blocked. A good compatible vendor should be able to program the EEPROM for the specific card. If they can't, that's a warning sign.
Scenario 3: Compliance constraints, OEM support, or new Infinera technology
Now the contrarian answer: sometimes you should not buy compatible optics.
If the system is under an Infinera maintenance contract, if the link carries international traffic with penalty clauses, or if your organization requires OEM-only parts in the production path, then compatible optics are not the right answer. No savings should override a compliance boundary.
And if you're buying new Infinera products with newest technologies—ICE6, XR optics, or whatever comes next—I'm probably not the best person to recommend compatible alternatives. I've tested a lot of C300-era modules, but I haven't tested every new card at that depth. My professional boundary is real. I'd rather send you to Infinera with your service contract than pretend to be a generalist who can cover everything.
That's not false modesty. A vendor who says 'this one isn't our strength' is more trustworthy than one who claims to do everything.
Scenario 4: You typed 'how to unblock a number on phone'
Let me take a small detour. If you actually wanted to unblock a number on your phone, here's the answer: open Settings, go to Phone, then Blocked Contacts, and move the number to Unblock. On many phones, you tap Edit or the Unblock button after selecting the number. That's it.
I honestly don't know why this page would rank for that search. My best guess is that 'unblock,' 'number,' and 'phone' trigger a search engine match that has nothing to do with optics. It happens.
For network professionals, 'blocked' on a Coriant Infinera C300 is a different problem. A port can stay blocked because the transceiver's EEPROM is not recognized by the card. Check the SFF-8472 diagnostics and vendor ID. Sometimes a compatible module with the right EEPROM clears it immediately. Sometimes you need a firmware update. Don't force the port in software and call it fixed. Verify that optical parameters look correct first.
How to tell which scenario you're in
No flowchart needed. Ask yourself four questions:
- Is the problem live right now? If yes, Scenario 1.
- Am I refreshing a legacy fleet with no hard deadline? Scenario 2.
- Is this a new deployment under OEM support or a compliance requirement? Scenario 3.
- Did I actually search for 'how to unblock a number on phone'? Scenario 4—your answer is up in the settings menu.
If you're still unsure, the safest move is to keep OEM modules in the critical path and qualify compatible modules in less critical links first. That's not a compromise; it's a protocol.
My bottom line
The best optic is the one you've already tested in the card you're trying to fix.
I've seen teams save $120 on a module and burn six hours troubleshooting. I've also seen teams pay $1,000 for an OEM module because they didn't ask about next-day compatible stock. Both mistakes come from applying one universal rule instead of reading the scenario.
